Study: half of women report nearly daily gender discrimination

According to a recent survey, 69 percent of American women feel more empowered than ever before. While that is certainly good news, the Onepoll survey of 1,000 women and 1,000 men also found that 63 percent of all respondents believe that gender discrimination is here to stay.

Half of the women polled said say they experience discrimination based on gender nearly every day.

According to a news article, 72 percent of the men polled "agreed that women still face gender discrimination nearly every day."

A majority of women (59 percent) also said they believe that pregnant women "would have a more difficult time in a job interview." Nearly two-thirds of respondents also think that women receive more scrutiny in job interviews than men do.

Nearly three-quarters of the survey's female respondents said that women's empowerment is a critical component in achieving gender equality.

Women were also asked to name the most inspiring people in their lives. Here are their top five responses (more than one answer was accepted):

  • 60 percent: mother
  • 44 percent: a teacher
  • 30 percent: aunt
  • 28 percent: grandmother
  • 28 percent: sister

Seventy percent of women surveyed said they think that uplifting other women helps them to feel empowered as well, and nearly three-quarters of women think that feelings of empowerment are crucial to achieving gender equality.
